Techniques to motivate the project team 

In his book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us. Daniel Pink states that for knowledge workers financial bonuses are not the best way to generate intrinsic motivation.

TIP: Motivation of knowledge workers is all about Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose.

Pink proposes Motivation 3.0 as a more effective way to engage creative workers:

  1. give people the Autonomy to reach goals defined with the leader (do not micromanage them)

  2. give them time and means to achieve Mastery of the skills required to complete the work

  3. guide them towards the Purpose that leads to company objectives.

Ideally, motivation should lead the team into the Flow when people are totally focused on the task ahead. This is how to get maximum performance in a rather natural way.
